The Houston Texans have agreed to a carbon credit deal with 1PointFive, a subsidiary of Occidental’s Low Carbon Ventures, for the purchase of carbon removal credits generated by the latter’s Direct Air Capture (DAC) plant in Ector Country, Texas.

The plant is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2024 and the credits will allow the Texans to offset their estimated carbon emissions for all regular season away games over the next three years. The CO2 captured for the agreement with the Texans will be sequestered in salt reservoirs unrelated to oil and gas production.

This agreement is one of the first real-world examples of how Direct Air Capture can provide a practical solution for hard-to-decarbonize activities, such as air travel and ultimately help meet climate goals.

Back in March, 2022, 1PointFive signed a deal with Airbus for the purchase of 400,000 tons of carbon removal credits that will most likely come from the same facility that will be used for the Texans.
