SBTi Evolves Standards to Mandate Corporate Net Zero Accountability
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the primary global organization for validating corporate climate commitments, is officially transitioning its framework from a voluntary "leadership" model to a mandatory compliance structure for major corporations. While the industry has long debated whether voluntary targets are losing steam, the SBTi's move to refine its Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2 signals that climate action is becoming a non-negotiable part of business operations rather than an optional marketing exercise. This shift reflects a broader market trend where regulators and investors are demanding standardized, high-integrity data over vague environmental promises.
The updated SBTi framework introduces a phased timeline that turns current voluntary actions into strict requirements for companies across the MSCI World Index. By January 1, 2028, the revised standards will become the mandatory benchmark for all participating firms, with a significant leap occurring in 2035. At that point, Category A companies will be required to take financial and operational responsibility for at least 1% of their residual Scope 1–3 emissions through permanent carbon removal activities, a percentage that will scale up as they approach their final net-zero target years.
This evolution brings several technical updates designed to offer flexibility while ensuring that "Net Zero" remains a scientifically grounded goal:
- Implementation of the Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2 to streamline target-setting across diverse sectors.
- Mandatory neutralization of residual emissions via carbon removals by the company's target year.
- New recognition tiers: "Recognized" and "Leadership": to categorize corporate progress before the 2035 mandatory threshold.
- Alignment with the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market’s Core Carbon Principles to ensure high-quality offsets.
"The shift from voluntary participation to a structured, mandatory requirement is essential to ensure that corporate climate action is both transparent and scientifically robust… we are moving into an era where accountability is the only way forward for global enterprises." : SBTi Leadership Statement.
